NFL Tips: Season Betting Tips
The New England Patriots. Super Bowl 53 winners and the holders of the Vince Lombardi trophy going into the 2019 season and 2020 playoffs. When it was all said and done last year the modern-day dynasty in the NFL held aloft the gold. That doesn’t tell the full story of an exciting season with new teams showing their metal and old challengers not living up to the standards they have set themselves.
Last season was in many ways a showing of offence through the NFL. The Los Angeles Rams, the New Orleans Saints and the Kansas City Chiefs all played a high-speed offensive game that was super exciting to watch as a fan. The Chiefs averaged a staggering 35.3 points per game with their quarterback Patrick Mahomes throwing 50 touchdown passes in his second season in the NFL and first as a starter. He was the big star throughout the league last year winning the NFL Most Valuable Player Award and NFL Offensive Player of the Year also. Mahomes is a star for many years to come. The defence as ever played an important role however with many top defensive teams making the playoffs such as the Baltimore Ravens, the Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Bears. Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles Rams won Defensive Player of the year for the second straight season finishing the season with a crazy 20.5 sacks for the season.
For the teams that made the playoffs, there were no huge surprises. Perhaps the biggest shock was the Indianapolis Colts came back to form with Andrew Luck playing back to his best in the AFC and in the NFC the Dallas Cowboys continued to look like a team maturing every year. The conference championships came down to the New Orleans Saints v the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC and the New England Patriots v the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC. Super Bowl 53 was a battle between the Patriots and the Rams with the Patriots the victors of a low scoring affair. All the offence of the 2018 regular season ended in a boring 13-3 win for New England. Tom Brady once again stood atop the NFL as its top star, what will 2019 bring? New stars? Crazy offence? Or perhaps defence and the running game will once again be the recipe for success. Take a look at our recommended American Football betting offers here.
The Main Contenders
With the NFL broke into two separate conferences there are a number of teams that have genuine chances of a Super Bowl trip in the 2019 season. In the AFC the Kansas City Chiefs and the New England Patriots look to be the standout teams and, in the NFC, the New Orleans Saints and the Dallas Cowboys look to have the best chances to reach the Super Bowl.
Kansas City Chiefs
This isn’t really a surprise pick as they were beaten in the AFC Championship game last year. Offensive they are a loaded team with Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce. Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins and many others all combining for a potent air attack. They will be the NFL leadings offence again in 2019 and defensively they have added a top defensive back and leader in Tyrann Mathieu, defensive end Frank Clark and will utilise a new defensive scheme under a new coordinator.
- Pros – Offence, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Leadership
- Cons – Poor playoff record – lost last 12 of 14 games, Maturity.

Beaten in the conference semifinals in the NFC last year this Cowboys team is maturing year after year. They are a young group with the quarterback and running back entering their fourth seasons. They have a solid blend of offensive using the running game with Zeke Elliot to their advantage and good defence. A top-five defensive team last year, good against the run and creating turnovers. Dallas Cowboys fans will believe this is the year.
- Pros – Running Attack, Defence, Good Home Record
- Cons – Tough Division, Young Team
Paddy Power is offering 22/1 for the Cowboys upset.

The Surprise Packages
According to the odds in Paddy Power, there are a number of teams that will surprise people and the oddsmakers. The Indianapolis Colts, The Carolina Panthers and the San Francisco 49ers are teams with outside chances in the 2019 season and can outplay their odds.
The Indianapolis Colts
Despite a 1-5 start the last year the Colts got it together and made the playoffs against all the odds. They are only the third ever team to do so after such a start. As a wildcard team, they beat their fellow division opponents the Houston Texans and were knocked out by the Chiefs in the Divisional round. The Colts can win their division this year and improve on their record last year of 10-6. Much the same team as last year it should not surprise if the Colts progress on last year.
- Pros – Quarterback Andrew Luck
- Cons – Luck being Injured (struggling in the offseason), Tough Division with the Houston Texans part of it.
The Colts are 14/1 with 32Red
The Carolina Panthers
Super Bowl contenders in 2015 and a playoff team in 2017 the Panthers endured a torrid time last season after a solid start they ended up with a 7-9 record and a third-place finish in their division with no playoff berth. The Panthers will rebound this year, their roster is too talented for another poor season. Last year injuries to their talismanic quarterback Cam Newton had the Panthers struggling. Cam should bounce back this year and play more football more like the 2015 season when he was MVP.
- Pros – Cam Newton, Luke Kuechly
- Cons – Injuries, 1-7 last 8 games last year
50/1 for the Panthers to cause an upset.
San Francisco 49ers
A team with a dismal record over the last couple of seasons their fortunes were supposed to change last year. However, plagued by injuries, Running Back Jerick McKinnon tore his ACL in training camp and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo also tore his ACL in week 3 against the Chiefs the 49ers season never really got started before it had failed. San Francisco has nothing to lose this year, finished the season as a 4-12 team last year and will look to build on that record. Don’t be surprised by the 49ers challenge for the division with their starting healthy again.
- Pros – Jimmy G, Coached by Kyle Shanahan
- Cons – Perennial losing team
A tasty 28/1 for the 49ers to be top dogs
The Key Draft Picks
On April 25-27th the NFL had its yearly draft. An exciting crop of youngsters was drafted to teams in need of players to fill positions. As ever they were a few surprises along the way with top college prospects falling down the line in terms of team selection. A strange pick was made by the New York Giants also who had the 6th pick in the draft. Now its time for the rookies to strut their stuff in the big leagues, college is over, can they fulfil their potential? To find out who I am excited about click here to our Top Draft Picks page.
Fixtures that Could Make or Break a Season
As ever in an NFL regular season, there are some superb games scheduled. Some that have gotten my attention is in Week 8 Cleveland Browns at New England Patriots. In Week 2 the New Orleans Saints at Los Angeles Rams and in Week 16 the Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles. Three important fixtures that can half playoff ramifications throughout the league. These fixtures pit young pretenders against established teams again looking for glory. New Orleans and the Rams is a repeat of last years NFC Championship game and are sure to be game of the week in week 2. In the Cleveland Browns, we have a new emerging force going against the proven winners in New England. Dallas and Philadelphia week 15, possibly win the division and home-field advantage – a superb game.
Cleveland at New England:
Sunday, October 27th, 2019, Gillette Stadium – Foxborough, Massachusetts the Browns travel to the Patriots. The Browns have spent the last two seasons adding depth and star power to a team that has been a perennial loser in the NFL. This is a year they believe they can make a playoff run. Adding wide receiver Odell Beckham for this season was the biggest show of their intentions and what better way to test their credentials then against the long-standing dynasty of the modern era.
Dallas at Philadelphia:
Sunday 22nd December 2019, Lincoln Financial Field – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. What is sure to be a division deciding encounter between two teams high on the NFC pecking order this is game of the week in week 16. This might just decide between who gets home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
New Orleans at Los Angeles Rams:
Sunday 15th September 2019, L.A. Memorial Coliseum – Los Angeles, California. A replay of the NFC Championship game last year, the New Orleans Saints will seek revenge on the team that beat them to a playoff spot. Two teams that should make the playoffs again in 2019 this one is not to be missed.
The Conference Winners
I believe the winners of each conference will be in the NFC – Dallas and in the AFC – Kansas City. I just believe they are young, hungry and have the right split between offence and defence to see them through to the Super Bowl.
