We talk to Adam Kalmanson CEO of Bookee App on becoming the Tinder of gambling

We first reviewed the Tinder of gambling way back in February, since then it’s been updated with a few more features so we took another look in October.

Intrigued to know more, we have a chat to Bookee found Adam Kalmanson to see what the future holds for the Gambling App that hopes to connect punters with personalised betting markets.

Explain the Bookee App in a couple of sentences…

Bookee is a mobile sports betting app using technology to create a simple, personal & fun customer experience. We curate individual personalized sports bets for the recreational gambler and provide them a single instinctive binary action for each bet – swipe right to approve or left to reject. Think – ‘tinder’ for betting.

Why did you build the Bookee App? 

The leading UK betting companies like Bet365Betway and Ladbrokes, address mobile as an afterthought, by replicating their desktop websites for a smaller screen.  This represents a clunky user experience, with no call-to-action and fails to nurture the very personal relationship that mobile offers.  We saw other innovations in other industries (dating, transport, social networks) and though we could bring elements of these into the sports betting world.

How long did it take to develop Bookee and when was it launched?

It took about 10 months to develop our MVP and this version was launched in June 2016.

What has been the biggest challenge so far? 

Finding and nurturing tech talent.

What did you do before Bookee and what is the main team’s background?

I’ve worked in many different jobs within the industry. I started off managing the retention and VIP schemes at a group of online casinos. I moved on to William Hill where I ran the English speaking non-UK affiliation across 4 verticals. From there, I ran the UK affiliation team at William Hill before moving to manage acquisition at a group of online casinos.

Who do you admire in business?

Richard Flint. The way he has grown SkyBet is inspiring.

Has any service or product been particularly useful in setting up the Bookee App? What service could you simply not do without?

Both Appsflyer & Mixpanel have been great. Without Appsflyer and proper mobile attribution we wouldn’t be market the app effectively or efficiently. Mixpanel gives us fantastic insight into our players and their patterns inside the app.

What advice would you give to developers building an app?

Don’t try to do everything at once. You’ll never release a perfect product. Get something out into the real world and get real user feedback – learn from there.

What’s the Booke App/company credo?

Belief in our vision. There were lots of people who didn’t share our initial view. We had to overcome lots of obstacles to get to this stage, but we’re still here nearly 3 years later with a working app and thousands of active users.

What’s next for the Bookee App? Future developments, features, markets and so on…

We will be releasing Bookee 2.0 in early 2018 – it will be a much improved version of what’s currently in the market. Watch this space!
