Pakistan Cricket Team: Predicting their chances in 2019 World Cup

Cricket Pakistan logo

The twelfth edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be played from 30th May to 14th July 2019 and it is the fifth time that the tournament will be held in England and Wales. There will only be ten participants this time with West Indies and Afghanistan joining the top eight ranked ODI teams via the World Cup Qualifier that was held in March 2018. In addition to this, the 2019 World Cup will be the first one to not feature any Associate members. The format for the World Cup will be round-robin and knockouts, similar to the 1992 world cup.

Sarfaraz Ahmed’s Pakistan will be looking to follow the class of 1992 and win their second World Cup as they kick off their campaign against West Indies on May 31 at Trent Bridge. Pakistan all-rounder Shoaib Malik believes his team has a very good chance of winning the 2019 World Cup, which will take place in England and Wales. Let us understand the team in a better way.

About Pakistan Cricket Team

The Pakistan cricket team seems to rise above any internal conflicts that are going on, any selection issues plaguing the side or anything else that seems to be a major barrier. They will, however, are tested by the format of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 but hopefully will qualify for the final four. As history speaks, Pakistan often starts tournaments slowly and then builds up momentum as it goes along. Pakistan has lost to New Zealand, South Africa in ODI series recently, but Pakistan’s talented captain, who is hopeful of playing his third World Cup, has high hopes for his own team as well.

Presently, the Pakistan Cricket Team is one of the favourites among the betting maestros across the globe. The Pakistan betting odds are currently at a 10.00 mark and have all the chances to win the ICC World Cup 2019. But let’s face it! The legendary Indian cricket team has been in great form and is ranked number 2 in the world. Let’s not forget that India was the semi-finalist last year with key players being Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Jasprit Bumrah, and Virat Kohli. The Indian cricket team has always been a great force in the ODI cricket. On the other hand, England is listed as favourites despite having never previously won the World Cup trophy. This is not entirely surprising as the England cricket team is currently the world’s top-ranked men’s ODI team. The bookmakers around the world have England slightly ahead of India at present, and Australians are the next best on the list. Therefore, it might be a difficult road for Pakistan in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup

The Squad that was picked to represent Pakistan in the world cup are:

  • Fakhar Zaman
  • Imam-ul-Haq
  • Babar Azam
  • Abid Ali
  • Shaheen Afridi
  • Hasan Ali
  • Junaid Khan
  • Mohammad Hasnain
  • Shadab Khan
  • Shoaib Malik
  • Faheem Ashraf
  • Mohammad Hafeez
  • Imad Wasim
  • Haris Sohail
  • Sarfaraz Ahmed (Wicket Keeper, Captain)

Key players, strengths & challenges

The biggest challenge for Pakistan is going to be getting its batting firing. Apart from Babar Azam, there is no other consistent world-class player in the side. Other key players include Fakhar Zaman (was the hero of the Champions Trophy final and even scored a double 100 against Zimbabwe), Imam ul Haq (has a better technique and could provide a solid base from which Pakistan can build upon), players like Mohammad Hafeez, Shoaib Malik, and Sarfaraz Ahmed are going to form the heart of the Pakistani batting order. At best, the team has some batsmen that can bowl, but none proves to be a genuine all-rounder. However, the team’s strength lies in their bowling with players like Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Amir, Faheem Ashraf, and Mohammad Amir who may have not been a part of the Pakistani ODIs but can’t be ignored for the World Cup. Quality spinners like Shadab Khan and Imad Wasim add variety to a potent attack.

The bottom line

For Pakistan to win in England, the bowling will have to lead the way while a couple of batsmen will have to bat with all their strength, but again, England stands in a far better form at present, and will definitely edge ahead of Pakistan. The recent trend to very often chase just so you know what the target score suits the likes of England and India. But Pakistan have always been nervous chasers. They should look to buck the trend, bat first unless it’s a very green wicket or overcast, get as many runs as possible and then defend, because their strength is putting pressure through taking wickets and using the spinners to keep the run rate down. All in all, it’s a game plan that suits them better.
