After months of deliberating the BCCI has confirmed that the 2019 IPL season will be still staged in India despite the dates clashing with the country’s elections. The IPL was moved to South Africa in 2009 and UAE in 2014 for the same reason.
The first match is due to be played on the 23rd March, with the fixtures due to be released very soon.
Early to mid-March is the expected time where the 2019 final will be played due to the World Cup starting in England on May 30th.
The 2018 IPL was won by Chennai Super Kings under the leadership of cricketing legend MS Doni beating the current 2019 market leaders Hyderabad Sunrise.
2019 IPL Preview
Hyderabad Sunrisers are current 9/2 favorites to come out as the 2019 IPL winners after their 8-wicket defeat to Chennai Super Kings.
Hyderabad have an array of talent, Kane Williamson, Jonny Bairstow, David Warner and Rashid Khan plumping up their attack for a tilt at the championship. They should have enough strength and depth to have a real go chance of going one better this season, but they are not the only team with class in abundance.
As the saying goes `if it’s not broke, don’t fix it’ and is the case with the Chennai Super Kings with them keeping more or less the same squad that guided them to victory last season. MS Doni, the Indian superstar will take to the field as their captain once again and with the likes of Dwayne Bravo, Imran Tahir, M Vijay, Shane Watson and Harbhajan Singh all turning up again this season you are to be sure that MS and his army of superstars will be battling it out to retain their title.
Mumbai Indians have enlisted the services of Lasith Malinga, and Yuvraj Singh to add to their squad that is already bumped up by Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya. They will need to up their game again from last season when finishing out of the top four with a total of 12 points.
A stong case can be made for the Rajasthan Royals who have an array of talent in their squad with the T20 specialists Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes, who if getting in a rhythm can absolutely put a game to bed in the matter of a few innings with their power striking then throw in the disgraced former Aussie captain Steve Smyth into the mix as well. Put that all together then on paper Rajasthan Royals look to have a huge chance to claiming this year’s title at odds of 6/1.
Kolkata Knight Rider finished 3rd, just 2 points off the top 2 that where Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings in the league table for last season’s IPL and met Sunrise Hyderabad in the semi-final but came up short by 14 runs. They are likely to give it a bold bid again, but feelings are that they might just come up a bit short this season.
Royal Challengers Bangalore are coming into this with some in form players, with Virat Kohli at the top of his game and with the backing of former South African International AB de Villiers spear heading their batting attack and with Umesh Yadav, Tim Southee and Nathan Coulter – Nile heading the bowling attack.
Delhi Captails are 8/1 to be crowned 2019 IPL champions. The price reflects their chance with their squad lacking the strength and depth as some of the other teams in the IPL. But being coached by the Aussie legendary batsman Ricky Ponting, their tactics will be thought out down to the smallest detail to try get the best out of their squad.
Kings XI Punjab are the outsiders of the field at a price of 9/1, they will do well to challenge the market leaders this season. But with West Indies all-rounder Chris Gayle in their ranks you are always in with a shout in any T20 match. Kings XI have a crack bowler in their ranks with Andrew Tyr, who has improved since his debut in 2017 but with all that said they really do lack the strength in depth to challenge for the title.
2019 Players Auction
Josh Buttler who scored 548 runs for Rajasthan Royals on the 2018 season, was retained by the franchise for the forthcoming 2019 season where he will be joined by fellow England team mates Ben Stokes and Jofa Archer.
Some other noteworthy players that were retained by other franchises in the 2019 auction that took place in Jaipur are, Sam Curran who was signed for $1,000,000 by King XI Punjab. Jonny Bairstow is on his way to Sunrisers Hyderabad, while Joe Denly and Harry Gurney are on their way to Kolkata Riders and Liam Livingston was swooped up by Rajasthan.
Royal Challenger Bangalore have recently confirmed that AB de Villiers will play in the 2019 IPL for them. This decision was up in the air after AB de Villers sudden decision to retire from International cricket.
A man that was high in demand was Prabhsimran Singh. Both Mumbai Indian, Kings XI and Royal Challengers Bangalore battled it out to secure his services with Kings XI getting the better of the battle by securing Singh’s services for 4.8 crore.
Exciting young West Indies batsman Sherfane Rutherford was snapped up by Delhi Capitals for 200 lakh.
Rajasthan Royals have taken a punt with young Jamaican fast bowler Oshane Thomas for 110 lakh.
One deal that raised eyebrows was the retention of the ball tampering banded duo Steve Smith and David Warner, who were retained by Rajasthan Royals and Sunrises Hyderabad for the forthcoming season.
